Konstantin Khudyakov
«Masterfully wielding the latest computer technology, Khudyakov achieves in his works volumetric virtuality of characters, which diagnoses the situation of penetration of virtuality and reality into each other – the situation, in which our perception of art is problematized».– Alexander Evangeli – Escaping density of being
He uses digital technology as an essential part of his creative and presentation process.
He took his degree in Architecture in the Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy). While still a student, from 1965 to 1971 he was keen on Constructivism of the 1920s.
The large-scale project “City of the Future in Siberia.” was implemented under the influence of the British group “Archigram”, the American architect Paolo Soleri and the started construction of the World Trade Center in New York City by the architect Yamasaki. That project determined the main subject of Konstantin Khudyakov’s thesis for an academic degree. The hand-made micro video camera was to move inside a large paper model. After film editing the impression of the real urban environment and interiors came out.
Shortly after getting his degree in Architecture in 1971, Konstantin Khudyakov was appointed the Chief artist at the Central Museum of Lenin in Moscow. For 10 years, from 1972 to 1981 Khudyakov was engaged in the realization of his reconstruction project of main exhibition halls of the Central Museum of Lenin, that comprised the design of museum equipment, design and implementation of expositions in the Soviet Union, and also in the countries of the socialist camp, Switzerland, Finland, Yemen, France. Subsequently Khudyakov also developed the architectural and design concept of the building reconstruction of the Central Museum of Lenin.
For the design of the affiliates of the Central Museum of Lenin in the town of Frunze in 1984 Khudyakov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR.
But the pursuit of the development and application of innovative technologies in the arts, as well as avant-garde outlook encouraged Khudyakov to switch to dissident art activity. Airbrushing and photography were the main tools of Khudyakov that time.
In the late 1980’s – early 1990’s, while working entirely on his own, the artist puts the camera and then the video projector into his arsenal. He continues to work with the airbrush, develops computer-digital technologies and programs. Khudyakov generates a bank of digital images, consisted of several tens of thousands of images. Projects “Deisis”, “Hotel Russia”, “Russian Landscape”, “Moscow panorama”, “Life of Insects”, “Map of the World” – all of them created through the synthesis of the arts.
Khudyakov connects the microcosm with the macrocosm: he peers intently into the smallest details of the world (the series “Life of Insects”) and creates his own version of the “Last Supper”, presented at the 54th Venice Art Biennale 2011.
Khudyakov is one of the first artists in Russia to use digital media, inventing “Multi-Touch Art”, through which digital images are processed on a computer and then presented on an interactive screen. Always fascinated by an idiosyncratic perception of the world around him, he has tried (first as an architect and then as an artist) to interact and change the viewer’s own perception. In this sense, the cinema has played an important role in the creation of his works that were initially characterized by mega screens reproducing images of a stereoscopic and perimetric vision, similar to that of a fly, and which later evolved into interactive systems.
Since 2010 Konstantin Khudyakov has been completely focused on creative holography.
His pioneer light box with hologram named “Karl Marx” and depicting Senior Jean Blanchaert, resembling Karl Heinrich Marx, the German philosopher, was exhibited at the Art Biennale in Venice in 2011, within the Glasstress project.
A process of shooting involves an extraordinary technological array: a high-resolution digital camera which moved along a rail taking 160 images over several seconds, and subsequently a 3-D data scanner.
Holographic stereograms are being constructed from a sequence of still photographic images shot from different angles. These could be taken by a video camera which is to move from left to right, taking multiple frames in a single five to eight-second pass. Or they could be taken digitally, from 3-dimensional object. Being integrated into a LED light box, holograms become a part of the accomplished artwork.
Khudyakov’s work – is an attempt to create an image of a Superman, as well as an image of the new religious art («Deisis»). His stereo images, interactive panels and digital large format canvases are created with high technologies and innovative methods of their synthesis, and at the same time they solve actual creative tasks.
Konstantin Khudyakov is a President of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia, Chairman of the art gallery “M’Ars” in Moscow, member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.
